Resetting Admin Password on IP440

I bought an IP440 on eBay recently and I'm trying to reset the admin password.  It's running IPSO 3.4.1

I get to the Boot: prompt. but it doesn't seem to allow any input there.  I have tried 3 different terminal emulators, including SecureCRT, but I can't type the "-s" when I am supposed to.

I don't have any other method to booting this thing, unless someone can provide me with an IPSO boot floppy or a CD.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

reboot the ip440 with a console (secure crt or whatever) when you see the output:

boot:

type "-s" and confirm (without "")

press return to receive a shell, and type:

/etc/overpw

and confirm with a Y

login again and type:

dbpasswd admin newpassword ""

as you can see between "" there is no password specified

and after save all with:

dbset :save

i suggest you to use a boot disk and start from scratch a fresh installation.

bye

Raoul

I type "-s" at the Boot: prompt and nothing happens.  Therein lies the problem

I've run into this situation before.  DO NOT USE SecureCRT.  What you need is Teraterm Pro.  It is FREE.  Boot up the Nokia via the console (make sure it's the console and not the modem serial port).  Make sure you set Teraterm to 9600.  Boot up the IP440, at the boot prompt:  type "-s".  It works for me.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that, make sure the DB-9 connector works.  On some of the IP440, the cisco DB-9 connector just will not work with the IP440.  Use the "gray" db-9 connector that comes with the IP440.

TeraTerm didn't work either.

I'm using a generic null modem cable.  I see the output, but can't seem to input anything.  Is the cable for these things special?

Thanks for the help

I would do the following:

1) use the cisco DB-9 connector with Cisco "rollover" cable.  cisco rollover calble usually comes in either black or ocean blue color.

2) If step 1 doesn't work, use the DB-9 connector that comes with the firewall.  The db-9 connector looks "gray".

I can reproduce your problem.  You can see it but can't type anything on the screen.

good luck my friend

Well, I'm feeling a bit dumb.

There is a cable diagram in the Getting Started manual, but the fact that they called it a "null modem" cable threw me.

The cable is simply 3 conductors: 2-3, 3-2 and 5-5.

Works like a charm now that I made what they had diagramed in the book.

Thanks for all your help.  I'm in business now.
